Poona is a quiet fishing village east of Gympie by the Cooloola Coast road and north of Rainbow beach and Tin Can Bay. The city of Maryborough is an easy half hour drive away with Hervey Bay an additional 20 min drive.
Situated on the protected waters of the Great Sandy Straits and only 8km by tinnie to the inside of Fraser Island. Poona is a three hour (approx) drive towing a boat from Brisbane.
Poona and surrounding areas have much to offer for a family holiday or a quiet time by yourselves with direct access to some of the best fishing and crabbing in south east Queensland.
There is an abundance of bird life and wild flowers when in season. Marine life is very active with dolphins, turtles and dugong always easy to sight. The coastline and surrounding area is unspoilt and not one highrise to be seen. Poona itself still has a village atmosphere and children can safely play and ride their bikes.
Poona is an excellent base for day trips to Tin Can Bay for dolphin feeding, Rainbow Beach for the coloured sands and day trips up the beach for a picnic or a swim at the surf club. From Rainbow Beach it is a short barge trip to the southern end of Fraser Island with direct access up the beach. To the north is Hervey Bay for whale watching and more boating.
Of cause that is not needed if all you require is the peace and quiet of Poona itself. Safe swimming on the beach, family days out in the boat, fishing from the beach, canoeing in the creek or walks in the bush. There are a number of beautiful beaches within easy access on the inside of Fraser Island. Park the car and forget it for the holidays.
The Great Sandy Strait and nearby creeks and inlets are fantastic for boating and water activities as it is protected by Fraser Island. Fishing and crabbing is excellent all year round.
There are many places where fish can be caught and crab pots dropped. Even if it is windy you can still get access to the creeks by 4 wheel drive to drop those pots in to that secret spot.
In the more open water of the straits you can catch whiting, flathead, bream and sand crabs. Of cause there is always the puffer fish as well. In the Straits there is patches of reef that allow a variety of reef fish to be caught (if you know the secret spots).
Seasonally Trevally, Mackerel and Tailor can be caught. In the creeks it is possible to hook onto muddies, Whiting, Flathead, Bream, Cod and Mangrove Jack.
Accommodation is a modern highset open plan home.
Direct access and views to the waterfront through foreshore easement.
Watch the family on the beach from the front deck.
